This Excel tutorial explains how to freeze panes to keep the first column visible when scrolling in Excel 2011 for Mac (with screenshots and step-by-step instructions).
To freeze the top row, open your Excel spreadsheet. Select the Layout tab from the toolbar at the top of the screen. Click on the Freeze Panes button and click on the Freeze Top Row option in the popup menu. Now when you scroll down, you should still continue to see the column headings. I have a worksheet where I am trying to freeze row 1-4. I select row 1-4, click 'freeze panes' but it freezes down to row 20, so rows 1-20 are frozen. It will freeze row 20 regardless of which rows I select to freeze.

Answer: If you need to see the first column (column A) even after scrolling, you could try freezing the pane in Excel.
